Just found time to have another look at this and it turned out that I didn't 
understand how it's supposed to work :-/

In the message reader, click the "Reply(to sender)" button, which loads the 
message into the internal editor. Then, click "Edit" in the menubar and then 
click "Open in external editor" and ..... Bingo! :-)
