I realized "ISP" modem/router after I sent the message.  I still  
don't really think of the DSL or cable devices as modems when  
the term modem is used all by itself in a sentence.  For me,  
when *just* saying "modem", it's the box that connects an anolog  
POTS line to a computer.  However, in context it would be  
obvious that it could also be the dsl or cable or fibe variety.

However, I *do* have at least one old damaged "isp"/dsl modem to  
the pile.   I don't know why I haven't thrown that out yet.

I suppose your zyxel replacement was something provided under a  
warranty or the rental program?

I have a dsl modem that has a broken port-forwarding function.  
It's programmable, but the results don't follow through.  I've  
configured port-farwarding in a previous dsl modem so I know  
what I should expect. But this darn replacement that the ISP  
sent me several years ago does not cooperate.

I have wondered if it's a simple matter to hot-swap an existing  
dsl/modem router with another one off-the-shelf.  Many of the  
config options scare me.  It does not seem as simple as  
configuring just a un and pw.
