You may have already seen this but my BossNode(Richard) has posted a  
definitive solution to this problem: see msgid 5ecf80a1 in the GOLDED  
echo.

For those users who aren't linked into the GOLDED echo, the solution is to  
add the following line to the golded.cfg file .....

HIGHLIGHTUNREAD Yes
