WRT a letter, the FROM info is usually on the envelope which can get misplaced or discarded. On personal letters, we don't duplicate our full names and addresses in the actual letter. So, a sig provides the necessary id/reminder who it's from. WRT email/netmail, all our FROM+address info is visible all the time. Hence, no need to add the same name at the end of a message.
