FWIW: both of you should not have a password in place until initial comms are 
established and then only when you both agree to turn on the password at the 
same time...

oh wait... you're using mystic? check your configuration Servers->binkd_server 
and ensure that you have "force cram-md5" set to no... you should only set the 
cram-md5 option in each echomail node's session options...
