I heard about 4DOS, but never used it myself.

The trick I used is very simple. While "echo" in CMD does not provide for including a control character in the string to 'echo' when typed on the command line, it does process control characters when it is used in a batch file.

So all that is needed is a text editor that can enter control characters in a text (.bat) file.
