Sure, for a dedicated link almost anything will do. Even Pigeon mail.

But of course this subthread was in the context of advertising protocols in the nodelist.

Indeed. Advertising a method of connection in the nodelist is only use usefull if it contains ALL the information needed to establish a connection. If you need a password or any other additional information it is not only useless to have the associated flag in the nodelist, I would say it is misleading. Having passwords in the nodelist defeats the purpose of passwords. And FTP without a password is an open invitation for hackers.
