Irex supported e-mail tunneling out of the box. I tried it out for a while. This is what was in the nodelist for 2:280/5555 between Apr 2007 and Jun 2008:

Other than the arranged test calls, I received ZERO calls using this method. But the listed e-mail address did attract some spam. I decided that the added value of listing e-mail tunneling capability was negative in my case and I dropped it. Never regretted it.

You are mixing levels. The e-mail flags are about how to encode the *.pkt or compressed mail archives in the message text of the e-mail. SMTP is the protocl for sending the e-mail. Different level.

Forget about the nodelist epilog. Look at FTS-5001. No mention of SMTP.
