I've played with FUDforum.  Haven't tried integrating NNTP, only mailing lists,
which it does quite well.

That's a configuration issue, from what I remember.  You have a choice of
either auto creating a new account for every unknown poster or not.  If you do
allow the account creation, messages coming in via NNTP will appear from the
poster, otherwise they will appear as you describe.

I had no issues with mailing lists (like Yahoo groups, etc), but no experience
with NNTP.
