Just try out some LiveCDs of some of the popular distros that should work the best with CentOS (Fedora, Ubuntu or even CentOS itself) before you decide on a permanent solution. I've used Thunderbird for email and NNTP for quite some time now. Haven't really had a reason to look at any others as I've been happy with it. Chrome and Skype will install on anything, and I have no idea what Slack is but if it's a fairly popular program it'll most likely work on anything as well.
