If you start from the live cd, try runnung "lspci -v" and search for the part that starts with ".... Ethernet controller:" In this section, you see the lines "Kernel driver in use" and "Kernel modules". Which driver/module is it? Also, you could try googling the name of the NIC (the part behind "Ethernet controller:") together with "firmware linux" or "firmware ubuntu", which might tell you the name of the firmware package you need.
