Subj : tin v2.6.4 To : Fidonet.JAMNNTPD From : Nick Boel Date : Sun Dec 29 2024 09:24:21 Hey All! The latest release of tin (v2.6.4) now does not work with Smapinntpd or Jamnntpd (the previous release did), and I'm not sure why just yet. It gets the groups as well as displays the number of new messages, subscribes, etc, but when you try to view the list of articles it shows a blank screen and marks all messages read when you back out of the article list. This began within the past year of tin snapshots, but I couldn't figure out which one, since snapshots were always replaced with new ones, and the code isn't up on github or anything. I waited to report anything until there was an actual public release to see if anything would change during that time, and it hasn't. I haven't been able to view or create any error logs yet, except that "Xref" isn't used by the server which may slow things down in tin (I don't think that's the problem since the old version reported this, also), and this new version does indeed work fine with Synchronet's NNTP server, as I'm using that to post this message. slrn (hasn't been updated in awhile) and Thunderbird (who's NNTP code probably hasn't been touched in awhile, either) both work fine with Smapinntpd/Jamnntpd still. So something has changed in tin, but I think it's safe to guess the problem probably lies in Smapinntpd/Jamnntpd's aged code, since the developers of tin are _very_ keen and strict to the standards they follow, and Smapinntpd/Jamnntpd was basically created for Fidonet-specific usage. If anyone cares to try it out and possibly help debug, the latest version can be found at http://tin.org and will need to be built for whatever platform you're going to use it on. Regards, Nick ....
