It's more like something between I2C and Ethernet. The maximum payload is 8 bytes per frame. So I wouldn't run IP over it.

I got no idea how much manufacturers started to move to Ethernet and IP, but it will be the next bus system in vehicles, since the CAN bus can't cope with cameras, multimedia streams and the increasing number of control units..
