This is in relation to the new FCC ruling in the USA.  It was to stop upgrades
that would let the user increase TX power from the radios.  The simplest way to
do that was to not let any other firmware be used other then from the
manufacturer.  Almost all have gone that route, except for that series of
LinkSys routers I mentioned
