My ISP gives you a modem/router combo (the one I currently have is a Surfboard 6141), but you can ask them to bypass the router in order to use your own. With that said, you have a choice between numerous older (and cheaper) routers as long as they support 3rd party firmware. Otherwise you can buy any newer router these days that supports it out of the box. I'm currently using an Asus RT-AC68R that does everything I need for now, even though there's even newer stuff out there these days.
