I've run tunnels on and off since around 2000, when it was _much_ harder to do so, as it required compiling Linux kernels by hand, experimental patches from Microsoft for Windows 2000, and some odd configuration to work around various bugs in those early implementations (like the default route not working on Linux!). ....
