Basically there are just two improvements, faster CPU and current WiFi. For most users those don't matter much. I think a common SOHO router could be used for 5 years. That's why OpwenWrt and other alternative firmwares are so important. They provide the updates the manufactures don't deliver. And the latest SOHO routers got dual core ARM CPUs at 1GHz or even above.
