I haven't researched it but I'm pretty sure copyrights are being broken in Fidonet at different levels .... that's the anarchistic beauty of it.
 
Without producing something entirely new or breaking copyrights, advancement is a challenge.
 
So, in this case the copyright-thing is merely an excuse to not do anything.
