Subj : SH ... who cho can submit the proposal? To : Vince Coen From : Sean Dennis Date : Thu Feb 21 2019 18:36:37 Hello Vince. 21 Feb 19 15:34, you wrote to me: VC> The progress of OS/2 since then from both sides of the pond has not VC> changed other than changes to drivers and most of that was via the VC> OS/2 community so I refused to remotely consider paying silly money VC> for a subscription for the so-called newer versions. Have you tried ArcaOS? There's a huge library of ported software available now via ANPM. Heck, I even have git running under ArcaOS. Microsoft co-owns the copyright on all of the kernel code and that's why it's not been open sourced. I have friends who work at the Austin, TX IBM campus who did a lot of work on OS/2 -- I even personally witnessed a version of Warp 4.52 that could run 32-bit Windows executables natively in one of their labs -- who told me that's pretty much the reason OS/2 died: Microsoft. It's still being used by a good portion of business because of its stability. VC> My attitude after such response was to migrate away from it - pity it VC> was a good system but just has not kept up with newer technology so my VC> decision to more away has proven valid. I don't mind. I mean, this is for a hobby and I'm not complaining. ArcaOS is still picky with hardware, just like the original OS/2 is, and I'd never recommend it for anything other than a BBS for my personal usage. I have Windows 10 64-bit set up for my amateur radio use though I am considering virtualizing that install and setting back up Slackware on that computer. It'd be a shame not to. VC> Luckily my mainframe on a stick work does NOT require the use of OS/2 VC> and Linux works well as does a Windows platform when pushed. I know someone who has a working HP mini-computer running HP UX in his basement. This thing has a console on a cart with a huge cable connecting it to the mini. He has it up just for fun. I told him he should offer shell accounts on it. :D Later, Sean P.S. I think we should take this to netmail as we've long jumped the thread... --- GoldED/2 3.0.1 * Origin: Outpost BBS - bbs.outpostbbs.net (1:18/200) .
