My BBS hosts a radio stream at http://radio.realitcheckbbs.org, and runs a mixture of ambient, house, darm ambient and acoustic tracks. I started the stream when I was working for a handful of clients and wanted to have music to listen to at work without needing to bring music on a USB stick. I used an old version of Winamp and the older versions of Nullsoft's 1.x Shoutcast Distributed Network Audio Server (DNAS) and a shoutcast plugin for Winamp. There are newer versions of the server and plugin, but they added another layer of security, and the older version mostly works. The DNAS server talks to the Shoutcast server and serves a music stream. A Shoutcast plug-in for WinAMP served the stream to DNAS. I use a plugin called AKAutoPlay that automatically plays a file, and have Winamp in my startup folder. There's a ton of music out there released under Creative Commons license; I've used the soundtracks from Jason Scott's BBS Documentary, GETLAMP and DEFCON documentaries as a start. Bandcamp is another good starting point for a variety of music under CC and other licenses.
