 AA> -o "$Conference" == "FIDOTEST"

Try this one as it should convert utf-8 to cp866 automagically.  I could do the same for latvian but I am sure it will get grunged.  I am not betting the farm that this one won't get grunged but it shouldn't if CHRS kludges are to be believed.
