Earlier yesterday evening there was a shooting in the adjacent apartment complex. Some dude reportedly shot his wife and was barricaded inside his/her apartment. The police cordoned off the street and no-one was allowed into or out of our complex. Then a bit later on the lights went out. Scuttlebutt had it that the police had turned off the lights in an effort to force the man out... Which made no sense whatsoever; the grid segment that went out covered a fairly large area, affecting some 15-18,000 customers. And it stayed off for, from as best I gather, some 4+ hours. A call to the automated outage reporting system got an immediate computer response that an outage had occurred and that they were working to correct it asap. Doesn't sound like something the police would have done; had they wanted to cut power to the man's apartment all they had to do is pull his meter or, at worst, pull the main switch for that building - - not shut down 1/6th the city. (Duuuh!) Then to top it off, this morning around 7:15 I started up all my machines again and noticed Binkley warning me "No Dialtone". And sure enough, the phone line was dead. A call to AT&T's automated system at 7:30 brought an off-the-wall computer response that they were closed and that normal business hours were from 7AM to 8PM... What's wrong with this picture folks? It's 7:30... Then a second part of the automated system asked the phone number and said repairs would be completed by Friday at 5:30PM. 5 minutes later the dial tone came back on. Weird. Hopefully this evening will prove to be completely unremarkable.
