For one thing, the full moon [4] is not usually this dark -- but last Friday the moon rose [5] here as it simultaneously passed through the shadow of the Earth. For another thing, the Moon does not usually look this red [6] -- but last Friday [7] it was slightly illuminated by red sunlight preferentially refracted [8] through the Earth's atmosphere. Next, the Moon doesn't usually rise next to a planet, but since Mars [9] was also coincidently nearly opposite [10] the Sun, the red planet was visible to the full moon [11] 's upper right. Finally, from the vantage point of most people, the Moon does not usually rise over Rio de Janeiro [12] in Brazil [13] . Last Friday's sunset eclipse [14] , however, specifically its remarkable Micro [15] Blood Moon [16] Total Lunar Eclipse [17] , was captured [18] from Rio's Botofogo Beach [19] , along with an unusually large crowd of interested onlookers.
