Although the large ash [5] plume was not unparalleled in its abundance, its location was particularly noticeable [6] because it drifted across [7] such well-populated areas. The Eyjafjallaj”kull [8] volcano in southern Iceland began erupting [9] on 2010 March 20, with a second eruption [10] starting under the center of a small glacier on 2010 April 14. Neither eruption was unusually powerful [11] . The second eruption, however, melted a large amount of glacial ice [12] which then cooled and fragmented lava [13] into gritty glass particles that were carried up with the rising volcanic [14] plume.
