[1] Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2019 April 2 [2] Space Station Silhouette on the Moon Image Credit & Copyright: Eric Holland [3] Explanation: What's that unusual spot on the Moon? It's the International Space Station [4] . Using precise timing, the Earth-orbiting space platform [5] was photographed in front of a partially lit gibbous Moon [6] last month. The featured image was taken from Palo Alto [7] , California [8] , USA [9] with an exposure time of only 1/667 of a second [10] . In contrast, the duration of the transit of the ISS across the entire Moon [11] was about half a second [12] . A close inspection [13] of this unusually crisp ISS silhouette [14] will reveal the outlines of numerous solar panels and trusses. The bright crater Tycho [15] is visible on the lower left, as well as comparatively rough, light colored terrain known as highlands [16] , and relatively smooth, dark colored areas known as maria [17] . On-line tools can tell you when [18] the International Space Station [19] will be visible from your area.
