[1] Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2019 March 18 [2] Horsehead and Orion Nebulas Image Credit & Copyright: Mario Zauner [3] Explanation: The dark Horsehead Nebula [4] and the glowing Orion Nebula [5] are contrasting cosmic vistas. Adrift 1,500 light-years [6] away in one of the night sky's [7] most recognizable constellations [8] , they appear in opposite corners of the above stunning two-panel mosaic [9] . The familiar Horsehead [10] nebula appears as a dark cloud on the lower left, a small silhouette [11] notched against the glow of hydrogen (alpha [12] ) gas, here tinted orange. Alnitak [13] is the easternmost star in Orion's belt [14] and can be found to the left of the Horsehead [15] . Below Alnitak is the Flame Nebula [16] , with clouds of bright emission and dramatic [17] dark dust lanes. The magnificent emission region, the Orion Nebula [18] (aka M42), lies at the upper right, surrounded by the blue glow of reflecting dust. Immediately to its left is a prominent reflection nebula [19] sometimes called the Running Man. Pervasive tendrils [20] of glowing hydrogen gas are easily traced [21] throughout the region.
