Hawaii [4] ) Explanation: How can the Moon rise through a mountain? It cannot -- what was photographed here [5] is a moonrise [6] through the shadow [7] of a large volcano [8] . The volcano is Mauna Kea [9] , Hawai'i [10] , USA [11] , a frequent spot for spectacular [12] photographs [13] since [14] it [15] is [16] one of [17] the [18] premier [19] observing [20] locations [21] on [22] planet [23] Earth [24] . The Sun has just set in the opposite direction [25] , behind the camera. Additionally, the Moon [26] has just passed full phase [27] -- were it precisely at full [28] phase it would rise, possibly eclipsed [29] , at the very peak of the shadow. The Moon is actually rising in the triangular [30] shadow cone [31] of the volcano, a corridor of darkness [32] that tapers off in the distance like converging [33] train tracks. The Moon is too large and too far away to be affected by the shadow [34] of the volcano. Refraction [35] of moonlight through the Earth's atmosphere [36] makes the Moon [37] appear slightly oval. Cinder cone [38] s from old volcanic eruptions are visible in the foreground.
