Exactly what caused this eerie apparition [7] in 2013 was sure: one of the best auroral displays [8] in recent years. This spectacular aurora [9] had an unusually high degree of detail [10] . Pictured here [11] , the vivid green and purple auroral colors [12] are caused by high atmospheric oxygen [13] and nitrogen [14] reacting to a burst of incoming electrons [15] ..
