[1] Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2018 October 3 [2] NGC 1898: Globular Cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud Image Credit: ESA [3] / Hubble [4] & NASA [5] Explanation: Jewels don't shine this bright -- only stars do. And almost every spot in this glittering jewel [6] -box of an image from the Hubble Space Telescope [7] is a star. Now some stars are more red than our Sun [8] , and some more blue -- but all of them are much farther away. Although it takes light about 8 minutes to reach Earth [9] from the Sun, NGC 1898 is so far away that it takes light about 160,000 years [10] to get here. This huge ball of stars, NGC 1898 [11] , is called a globular cluster [12] and resides in the central bar [13] of the Large Magellanic Cloud [14] (LMC) -- a satellite galaxy [15] of our large Milky Way Galaxy [16] . The featured multi-colored image [17] includes light from the infrared [18] to the ultraviolet [19] and was taken to help determine if the stars of NGC 1898 [20] all formed at the same time, or at different times. There are increasing indications that most globular clusters formed stars in stages [21] , and that, in particular, stars from NGC 1898 formed [22] shortly after ancient encounter [23] s with the Small Magellanic Cloud [24] (SMC) and our Milky Way Galaxy.
