Hi, Alexander!  Recently you wrote in a message to All:

          I'll have more to say later, but here's the simple answer:


     Narrative

             I cleared my throat.
             I coughed gently/politely.
             I uttered a gentle/polite cough.


     Dialogue

             I said, "Ahem!"
             "Ahem!" I interrupted.


          In the above examples "ahem" is an onomatopoeic word, a conventional 
way of recording the sound in print.  In real life the sound may vary....  :-)
