Another my theory is that in Russia we use so called "alcohol meter". It looks 
like a usual glass thermometer, but in reality it floats vertically, like a 
fishing float and has a scale on its side. If you put it into a glass of 
alcohol it will show you its purity. ;) That scale maybe is in degrees, 
although I am not sure.
