The University of Manchester team had developed a detection system it
hoped would reveal the metal objects sitting just under the ice surface.

What a strange expression -- "their bid has been beaten into submission". By 
the scientists themselves? I would understand the phrase like "The robbers beat 
their victim into submission", but this one...
