March 3, 2022 - Rub'al-Khali Desert in Saudi Arabia

   The orange-toned sands and fascinating textures mark a field of sand
   dunes in the Rub’ al Khali, or “Empty Quarter” of the Arabian
   Peninsula. This massive sand sea sprawls over parts of Saudi Arabia,
   Yemen, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates, covering about 583,000
   square kilometers (225,000 square miles). Roughly the size of France,
   the Rub’ al Khali is said to hold about half as much sand as the entire
   Sahara Desert.

   On March 2, 2022, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer
   (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image
   of the some of the thick sands of the Rub’ al Khali. This particular
   section is located in eastern Saudi Arabia and extends northward into
   the United Arab Emirates.
