The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color view of the region on February 23. The Alps, capped in bright white snow and graced with green valleys, courses across the northern border of Italy, where the “beautiful country” (Bel Paese), abuts four other countries: France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Austria. The gorgeous green Po Valley, an area rich in agriculture, sits at the feet of the Alps. Running southward and forming the spine of Italy, the Apennines carry only spots of snow, suggesting warm winter weather. The country had suffered a record-breaking temperature in the summer of 2021 when a weather station in Syracuse, located on the island of Sicily, reported a searing 119.8˚F (48.8˚C) in August of that year. Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, sits just west of the “boot” of the Italian Peninsula.
