We had similar issues. I was at a large public software company, and we had
a *shared* ethernet topology. The IT desktop space was in the same subnet
as the mail and DNS servers, and everything came screeching to a halt when
we started playing!

I remember the CFO grabbing our technical architect and them both rushing
down to the IT area to find out what took the network down.

I think you need a better network. At the job before that, we'd had a
switched network with a budget a fraction of what the large company had.
