My daughter is 8, and we've been having fun with building simple Arduino and Raspberry Pi projects.
They use Scratch (whatever happened to GWBasic, LOGO and Turing?!?) at school
so the concepts are not too foreign.

I should dust off my old VIC and let her have a go with it. :)
