US politics, for at least 15+ years now, has been more about gaining power and making "the other side" suffer or, at least, very unhappy, than it is about actually doing what is right for the country as a whole. Politicians who are sensible get weeded out early in favor of the more polarizing ones. If I were looking for a conspiracy, I would be looking at who benefits from this.
