Sunday September 13 2020 23:30, from Charles Pierson -> Nil Alexandrov: >> Just let me understand the whole Fido to Telegram recent trend >> concept in general. Is it all about bringing in a mix a modern and >> convenient app for iOS/Android in lieu of native modern and >> convenient Fido app? ;-) CP> I would think it's for mobility access. Fido on the move, you can CP> keep up with some echoes while away from your computer. It is exactly the native Fidonet app use case you are talking about. CP> I have the only 2 point system s I can find in the Google play store, CP> and both have limitations, and little to no support. HotdogEd http://hotdoged.propush.ru and AfterShock http://www.asvcorp.ru/aftershock/ While HotdogEd still has support and free for FTN transport and is paid for NNTP, the AfterShock project is paid only option and is not supported and is known to have bad behavior with message threads and stuff. CP> This potentially could also give a way to introduce people to Fido who CP> aren't familiar with it by using a chat app, which most people are CP> familiar with, to access Fido echoes. Most software developers are bad at UI design, these are different roles and should be performed by a team. So far there is no good collaboration to establish some new fido app development in a modern fashion. Another difference is that a typical app will talk back to a centralized backend server to sync up all subscriptions and it usually makes it possible to access your mail and groups from different devices including mobile, desktop and web. This kind of works for NNTP where all messages are stored on the server and a client can cache them for offline reading. Where the FTN approach is to download bundles for a particular FTN address, e.g. point address. Once you download incoming packets to your mobile phone, you will not be able to get them on the other device. I now people will create a few point addresses and setup some netmail forwarding/copying between them, but this solution is ugly.
