A CVT file is an archive like ZIP or RAR.

You need to copy the file to a D64 image and then use a utility to extract the 
file.
The main utility for CVT files is geoConvert, which runs in GEOS.
There are other programs (for example Omega-Q) that can unpack CVT files, but 
it can be best to do the unpacking in GEOS.
