I was not fortunate enough to experience all of that, one set of grandparents did have a well for water and grew their own veg. My other grandmother had a wood stove for heat and no TV. She'd make dried apple pies from the apples that grew just behind the house. She also had what she called a "curiousity room" that contained old photo albums and several old books that we could pass the time reading.
