That also does not happen in the US.  Mine is good until it expires.  That
said, I do not know what happens if I do not *use* it for 6 months or more.
It may require some reactiviation at that point.

That actually does not sound like a bad requirement.  At least at the ATM
you (presumably) need to know the PIN code to use the card.
