Subj : August 10th - St. Blane To : All From : rich Date : Wed Aug 09 2017 10:06:11 From: rich August 10th - St. Blane Also known as Blaan, Blan, Blain Born 6th century at Isle of Bute, Scotland. Died c.590 at Kingarth, Isle of Bute, Scotland of natural causes. Buried in Dunblane, Scotland which was named for him He is said to have spent 7 years in Ireland under the instruction of St. Congall and St. Canice, and presumably became a monk there. He then returned to the isle of Bute ("in a boat without oars"), and put himself under the discipline of his uncle St. Cathan, who gave him holy orders, and he devoted his life to apostolic work in Scotland. He eventually became a bishop and is said to have gone on pilgrimage to Rome, returning on foot through England. A number of miracles are attributed to him, as that he rekindled the church lights, which had gone out during the night office, by striking fire from his finger-nails. He died and was buried at Kingarth in Bute, and on the site of his monastery the cathedral of Dunblane was built; his bell is still preserved there. Devotion to St. Blaan early became popular, and his feast is still observed today in the dioceses of Saint Andrews, Dunkeld (which includes the former see of Dunblane), and Argyll. The Aberdeen Breviary gives these and other details of the saint's life, which are rejected however, by the Bollandists. There can be no doubt that devotion to St. Blane was, from early times, popular in Scotland. His monastery became the site of the Cathedral of Dunblane. There was a church of St. Blane in Dumfries and another at Kilblane. The year of the saint's death is variously given as 446, 590, and 1000; 446 (Butler, Lives of the Saints) is evidently incorrect; the date 1000, found in Adam King, "Kalendar of Scottish Saints" (Paris, 1588), in Dempster, "Menologium Scotorum" (Bonn, 1622), and in the "Acta SS.", seems to have crept in by confusing St. Kenneth, whose disciple Blane was, with a Kenneth who was King of Scotland about A.D. 1000. The highest authorities say the saint died 590. The ruins of his church at Kingarth, Bute, where his remains were buried, are still standing and form an object of great interest to antiquarians; the bell of his monastery is preserved at Dunblane . Saint Quote: Guard your mind, and you will not be harassed by temptations. But if you fail to guard it, accept patiently whatever trial comes. --St. Mark the Ascetic Bible Quote: =E2=80=9CStretch forth your hand to the poor, so that your blessing maybe complete. Give graciously to all the living, and withhold not kindness from the dead. Do not fail those who weep, but mourn with those who mourn. Do not shrink from visiting the sick man, because of such deeds you will be loved. In all that you do, remember the end of your life, and then you will never sin.=E2=80=9D [Sirach 7: 32-36] <><><><> Prayer for Daily Neglects Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with all its Love, all its sufferings and all its merits. 1st--To expiate all the sins I have committed this day and during all my li= fe.
