Usually, the graphics card support of X11 is pretty good to at least get a visible interface. Else, NVidia on intel is supported, I don't know how this applies to non-intel machines though. But there are open-source Nvidia drivers around for X11 now, although they're not really 3D accelerated. Maybe hanging into IRC will get you some friendly help.
