Do you have any non-standard colors on-screen when booting (that is -> something else than light grey and dark grey)? -> OK, I'll give the expansion card thing a shot. The harddrive does spin up, but I get no bootup procedure. And there is absolutely no picture on the monitor -- it is blank. Even if the HD was dead, you'd think it would try to boot off df0: -- but none of that happens. :-( Anyway, thanks for the tips. I'll see if anything can be done.
