Sure. The only thing is very few people back in the old days had a compiler
suite installed, and usually it wasn't the same everywhere as now with gcc 
and
the whole utilities suite for development.

Things like ToolManager were always open source. Or term, or, or, or....Amiga
has it's share of open source software, and had since at least 1987.
