SAP is called a 'middleware', or some atrocious business software. The GUI actually reminds you of a mainframe, with the worst features of AIX, OS/390 and MS-DOS combined. The only saving grace is that so many people have bought it and there's a user base so large that SAP won't go under. And there's so much in the 3rd party software module area that you're bound to find a complete solution for your company, even if you manufacture small gerbils for ummm....special pleasures. ;) And the RS/6000 I have at my disposal just has two CPUs, not 8 - so it was not that awfully expensive, even back then......
