bash is pretty harmless. Look at the shell included in modern ZyXEL routers
for a really awful interface.

Upgrade, I heavily suggest it. It fixes quite a few security bugs.

OK, apply tar xvzf to that file, which should yield something like foo.rom.

Then get the software that uploads the ROM file into the NVRAM/EPROM space of
your A1 and reboot. Else, RTFM. :)

If your ROM is protected, flashing will fail - then you have to send at least
the ROM to your dealer, or investigate if removing a jumper solves the 
problem.
