Just >because I'm blind doesn't mean I have to think with the groupthink of >the blind. The recent government shutdown showed us all how dependent we all are, having to rely on government for services most of us never realize we have until they are no longer there. For example, everybody needs to eat, and we all go to get groceries to restock our supplies. But who checks to make sure our food is safe to eat? That's right. The federal government is responsible for hiring inspectors to inspect our food so that we do not get sick and die. It would be nice if we could all grow our own food and live off the land. But who has the time for that? And who would want to work that hard, even if they could? Farming is hard. Much easier to just go to the store and buy what you need or want. Roughly half of all Americans receive benefits of some kind. That does not mean that all benefits are welfare. For example, SNAP (food stamps) are available so that every American can afford to provide a healthy and balanced meal for their family. That is not welfare. Programs such as social security and medicare are not welfare, but entitlements. Like social security, social security disability is an entitlement, with no income limits. Earned benefits, not something that is simply given for the hell of it. Although SSI is technically not welfare, it really is since funds are drawn from the Department of the Treasury. There are income limits (no more than $2000), and recipients are also limited to earning no more than $65 per month. In addition, SSI recipients are not allowed to own much of anything. No health insurance is included, although medicaid is part of the deal. There is dignity in work. But why work when you don't have to? Most elderly choose to retire at a certain age and collect their social security, with medicare included. Why should they work `til they drop? Why would anybody want to? The economy is for the person. Not the other way around. Does the world owe me a living? As Sarah Palin would say, "You betcha!" So do yourself a favor. Grab whatever you can get. Now rather than later. You'll be glad you did. --Lee -- Every Bottom Needs A Top --- MesNews/1.08.05.00-gb * Origin: - nntp://rbb.fidonet.fi - Lake Ylo - Finland - (2:221/360) .
