I don't think it was such a pain to burn to optical drives.  I always used
optical burning software (such as Nero) but Windows started including
functionality to burn to optical discs since Windows XP, I believe, so you
could do drag & drop CD/DVD burning (I never used that feature much, so I don't
remember how exactly it worked).
