We are so spoiled with modern computer performance that I don't think I can remember a single time when I've sat there thinking "I wish this grep would hurry up".

Having said that I didn't touch any OS that *had* grep until I ordered the FreeBSD 4.3 (?) CD set, which would have been running on Pentium II or similar. I probably wouldn't have grep'd anything serious for another decade after that.
